Twelve days, five properties, four moves. Private guiding on the days it changes what you see. No departure before nine except two mornings that genuinely earn it.
Who it suits: couples, friends travelling together, and anyone whose last trip had too many hotels in it.

Day by day
Day 1: Arrive, night on the coast near the airport. A small property twenty minutes from arrivals rather than three hours in a car after a long flight. Nothing scheduled.
Day 2: To the cultural triangle. Three and a half hours north to a hotel built into a rock face above a twelfth century reservoir, one of the most quietly radical buildings in Asia and still the reference point for the whole style. Three nights. Afternoon at the Dambulla cave temples in the last light.
Day 3: Sigiriya at opening, then nothing. At the gate as it opens, with a private guide who can tell you what the frescoes and the mirror wall graffiti actually say. The climb is around 1,200 steps on exposed metal staircases with a slow section near the summit, which is precisely why the early slot matters. Back before ten. The rest of the day is the pool, the tank and the birdlife, which is exceptional here.
Day 4: Polonnaruwa, privately. Bicycles or a car at seven, a private archaeologist-guided morning through the ruined capital and the Gal Vihara Buddhas, back by lunch. Afternoon off. Sunset from the rock terrace.
Day 5: To Kandy. Three hours, with Nalanda Gedige on the way. Two nights in a planter’s house on the hills above the valley, with a garden, a fire and about six rooms. Evening puja at the Temple of the Tooth, entered by the side that visitors are not usually shown.
Day 6: Kandy, slowly. Peradeniya gardens at opening with a botanist, then the rest of the day at the house. An in-room treatment, a walk on the ridge, tea on the lawn.
Day 7: The hill country train. Reserved seats from Kandy or Peradeniya up to Nanu Oya, roughly four hours through the estates. Your driver takes the bags by road. Two nights in a tea estate bungalow: fires lit at six, a butler who has worked there for twenty years, and a lawn at 6,000 feet where you will want a jacket after dark.
Day 8: The estate. A private walk with a plucker, the factory at the hour the leaf comes in, and a tasting across the grades of a single garden. Afternoon by the fire, or a picnic laid out somewhere on the estate with nobody in it.
Day 9: To the south coast. The long leg, roughly four and a half hours, broken at Buduruwagala where seven colossal figures are carved into a cliff and there is rarely anyone else there. Three nights in a villa or small hotel on the coast near Tangalle, with staff and a cook.
Day 10: The coast. Nothing planned. In season, roughly December to April, an early private boat for blue whales, on an operator that keeps its distance. Otherwise the sea, the lagoon and a long lunch.
Day 11: Galle and Bawa’s garden. An hour and a half west. Galle Fort on foot with someone who knows the Dutch archives, the ramparts at dusk, and dinner inside the walls. If your interest is the architecture, we swap the morning for Lunuganga, Bawa’s own garden at Bentota, which is the closest thing this country has to a manifesto.
Day 12: Departure. Two and a half hours to the airport on the expressway.
What is included
Accommodation with breakfast in five small properties chosen individually for your dates, including a tea estate bungalow and a planter’s house, a private air-conditioned car with a licensed English-speaking chauffeur guide throughout, reserved train seats on the hill country leg with luggage moved by road, private specialist guiding at Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Kandy, Peradeniya and Galle, the estate walk, factory visit and tasting, a private whale boat in season, all entries, and a WhatsApp group with your consultant and our local representatives.
Honest notes
Sri Lanka’s best rooms are small and they sell out first. Eight-room houses have eight rooms. For December, January and February we would want six months, and for Christmas and New Year nine. If you come to us late we will tell you honestly what is still available rather than substituting quietly.
The luxury tier does not fix the driving. Day 9 is four and a half hours whatever you pay, because the hills and the south coast are that far apart, and there is no helicopter answer we would recommend as a matter of routine. We break the drive properly instead.
Sigiriya cannot be made private. No amount of budget buys you an empty rock. What we can do is put you there at opening with a good guide, which is most of the difference.
We do not include a beach club stop at Bentota on the way south. The coast between Colombo and Galle is developed and busy, and the beach three hours further on is better. Lunuganga is the reason to go to Bentota.
Whales are never guaranteed. Good odds in season, on the right boat, on a calm morning. That is all anyone can promise.
One deliberate omission. We have not put a safari in these twelve days. A boutique trip with a jeep morning in Yala’s block 1 is a boutique trip with a traffic jam in it. If you want wildlife at this standard we add two nights at a tented camp near Wilpattu and stretch the route to fourteen days.
