Here is the thing that decides whether you enjoy this country. Baku is glass, marble, restored stone and money, rebuilt to a standard that surprises people. The rest of Azerbaijan is not that. Two hours out of the capital you are on two-lane roads, in towns with one decent hotel, eating better food in worse rooms. Travellers who expect the capital everywhere are disappointed. Travellers who understand the trade in advance find that the north, Sheki, Lahic and Xinaliq, is the part they talk about afterwards.

We are straight about how we operate here. GO EAST staffs its own offices in Japan, Vietnam, India and the Philippines. Azerbaijan is not one of them. We run it through a Baku partner we have worked with for years, whose drivers, guides and mountain people meet you on the ground. We would rather name who is actually there than imply an office we do not have.

We will tell you the unwelcome thing. That Baku in July and August is humid rather than simply hot. That the road to Xinaliq is slow and the road to Lahic is narrow, and both are worth it anyway. That Ganja is a long drive for a modest reward and we would usually skip it. Our rating is 4.9 from 93 reviews largely because of that.

The border question, answered plainly
The land border between Azerbaijan and Armenia is closed. This is a practical planning fact rather than a political comment, and it has one consequence: you cannot travel overland between the two countries, and no route we build will attempt it. If you want two countries in the Caucasus, the answer is Azerbaijan and Georgia, over an open land border, and it is a very good answer.
