Boutique Azerbaijan in 8 days: four buildings worth the rate

So this is not a route that chains together twelve design hotels, because those hotels do not exist. It is a route built around four buildings that earn their rate, with the days arranged so that you spend real time in each of them rather than arriving at seven and leaving at nine.

Who it suits: travellers who care where they sleep, couples, and anyone who would rather have four excellent nights than eight adequate ones. Optional walking, none of it required.

Day by day

Days 1 to 3: Baku. Three nights in a restored house inside the walls of Icherisheher, or in an oil-boom mansion on the streets above the Boulevard, depending on which of the two you want. Both are small, both have real character and both are quieter than the towers.

Day one is arrival and nothing else, with an early dinner. Day two is the old city on foot in the morning with a guide, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, and then the afternoon free. Day three is the Heydar Aliyev Center with proper time, two or three hours, and then the Absheron peninsula at the end of the day for Ateshgah and Yanar Dag, which are best in the last light. Evenings are for the restaurants around Fountain Square and the tasting menus that Baku does surprisingly well now.

Day 4: Gobustan, then the Ismayilli hills. South first thing for the petroglyph reserve and the mud volcanoes, which is the one morning of this route with a rough track in it. Then west across the country, with lunch at Shamakhi, and up into the hills to a wine estate with rooms. Arrive by four with the afternoon in front of you.

Day 5: The estate. Nothing scheduled. A tasting in the cellar with the winemaker, a long lunch, the pool in season, and dinner cooked over vine wood. If you want an outing, Lahic is ninety minutes away up a gorge road and worth a morning. If you do not, the estate is the point of the day and we built it that way.

Day 6: To Sheki. Two and a half hours through the foothills. Two nights in the Karavansaray, an eighteenth-century caravanserai in the town where the rooms open onto a stone courtyard and the vaulting is original, or in the small hotel above the palace if you want a modern bathroom more than you want the building. We will describe both honestly and let you choose, because it is a real trade-off and the caravanserai is not a five-star hotel.

Day 7: Sheki. The Palace of the Shaki Khans in the late afternoon, when the light comes through the shebeke windows, which is when the building actually works. Morning for Kish and the old church above the town, and a shebeke workshop where the lattices are still made by hand. Piti for lunch in a clay pot. The rest of the day in the courtyard.

Day 8: Sheki to Baku, and out. Four and a half hours east with a proper lunch stop. A day room in Baku for late departures, or a final night in the city if you would rather not fly tired, which we will price as an option.

What is included

What we would change, and when

• Want a fifth building? Quba and the north have one or two mountain lodges that are genuinely good, and adding two nights there gives the route its best mountain days. It becomes a ten-day trip.
• Want a modern bathroom every night? Then Baku, Qabala and Sheki, and we skip the caravanserai and the estate. It is a comfortable route and a less interesting one, and we will say that when we send it.
• Travelling during the Formula 1 week? Baku hotel rates double or triple and the central streets close. We move the trip or we start in Sheki and finish in Baku after the circuit reopens.
• Travelling in winter? The estate and the Sheki caravanserai are cold-weather propositions in the honest sense. Both work, both are atmospheric under snow, and both are heated to a standard that suits some travellers and not others. We will tell you which room to ask for.

Honest notes

The gap between Baku and everywhere else is the defining fact of luxury travel in this country. In the capital you can spend as much as you like and get what you paid for. In Ismayilli and Sheki the ceiling is lower, and in Lahic and the northern villages there is no ceiling because there is no market. We would rather build you a shorter route around the good buildings than a longer one that pretends.

The Sheki Karavansaray is a historic building and it behaves like one. Thick stone, small windows, a stone courtyard, and plumbing that is adequate rather than impressive. It is a wonderful place to stay and it is not a suite in the capital. Some travellers love it and some would rather have the modern hotel, and both reactions are reasonable.

Service standards outside Baku are warm rather than polished. Staff will be genuinely pleased you are there and will not necessarily know how to run a turndown. If that distinction matters to you, tell us and we will weight the trip towards the capital.

The mud volcano track needs an old vehicle and can be impassable in wet weather. There is an alternative written into your document.

The land border with Armenia is closed and this route does not approach it.
