What a trip to Armenia really costs
Armenia is one of the best value countries we work in, and the number that surprises people is not the total. It is the split. The rooms and the food cost very little. The car, the driver and the guide are where a good Armenian trip is actually paid for, because there is no rail network worth using,
Here is the honest version, in US dollars, with the arithmetic shown.
Everything below is land only, per person, based on two people sharing a room. It excludes international flights, because those depend entirely on where you fly from. It includes accommodation, food, ground transport with a driver, entries and the guiding we would normally build in.
Daily cost by traveller type
These are the four anchors our consultants price against, and they are the same numbers as in our complete Armenia guide, because the guide and the magazine should not contradict each other.

Two things to notice. Yerevan has genuinely good hotels at every level and the provinces do not: Vayots Dzor, Syunik and the smaller towns have a handful of good places and then a long gap, so a boutique trip is expensive partly because those rooms are scarce. And the careful tier here is a pleasant trip rather than a compromise, because Armenian guesthouses are good and the food at them beats most restaurants.

Eight days is the shape most first visits take and it is our classic route. Eleven adds Syunik properly, or Gyumri and the north, or several serious walking days. Twenty-one is both Armenia and Georgia over the land border in the north, which is the pairing we recommend to anyone making this journey once.
Accommodation, night by night
Rates below are per room per night for two sharing, as planning guidance rather than a quote. Armenian hotel pricing moves sharply in the September harvest weeks, so we confirm the live rate for your exact dates before anything is booked.

The provincial line is the one to read twice. In parts of Syunik the best room available is a good guesthouse with a shared bathroom, and no amount of money changes that. It is the region rather than a failing, and the compensation is the table.
Food and wine
Armenia is cheap to eat in and the quality is high.

- Lunch at a village restaurant, several dishes shared: $7 to $11 a head
- Khorovats, the barbecue, at a roadside place: $10 to $15 a head
- Dinner in a good Yerevan restaurant, three courses: $15 to $28 a head
- Dinner at the top end of Yerevan: $45 to $70
- Bottle of decent Areni Noir in a restaurant: $12 to $22
- Bottle bought at the cellar in Vayots Dzor: $8 to $18
- Cellar tasting with bread, cheese and dried fruit: $10 to $20 a head
A realistic daily food and wine budget for someone eating widely is $28 to $40. You can eat very well at $20. Most monasteries are working churches and free, so entries are not a material line here. What to eat in Armenia covers where the money is best spent.
Transport and guiding, where the budget is decided
There is no passenger rail network worth using, internal flights do not exist for a country this size, and the intercity minibuses are slow and awkward with luggage. So the car is not optional and it is the largest line after rooms.

Split between two people, a driver day is $30 to $75 each, which is why we put a driver on every Armenian itinerary regardless of tier.
The guiding line is where we would spend an extra hundred dollars if you gave it to us. A guide who can read the donor inscription over a door changes a stone room into a building. We would rather give you four excellent guided days than eight ordinary ones.

What actually moves the number
- Where you sleep outside Yerevan. The capital is well supplied at every level. The provinces are not, and the few good rooms price accordingly.
- The season. The second half of September into the first week of October is the grape harvest in Vayots Dzor and the Ararat valley, and it is the expensive fortnight. May delivers a similar trip for less. Armenia month by month has the detail.
- Guiding days. Four good ones rather than eight ordinary ones, and the good ones are not cheap.
- How far south you go. Yerevan to Goris is about 155 miles (250 km) and four and a half to five hours on a two-lane mountain road. Syunik and Tatev need two nights, not one, and those nights and vehicle days are a real addition.
- Whether Georgia is attached. Fourteen days across both countries is better value per day than either country alone, because the long transfers are shared.
A planning fact that affects budgets
Armenia’s land borders with Azerbaijan and with Turkey are closed, so there is no overland route between Armenia and Azerbaijan in either direction and we will not build one. If you want both countries they are two separate trips, each reached by air and each best paired with Georgia over the open northern land border. We state this as a practical matter and take no view beyond it. In budget terms, a Caucasus trip is Armenia plus Georgia.
