What does a trip to Taiwan really cost?
The cost of a trip to Taiwan surprises people twice, in opposite directions. Food is cheaper than they expect, dramatically so for the quality. Hotels are more expensive than they expect, and Taipei room rates sit closer to Tokyo than to Bangkok.
Get those two facts the right way round and the budget becomes predictable. Everything below is land only, per person, based on two people sharing a room. It excludes international flights, because those depend entirely on where you fly from. It includes accommodation, food, ground transport, entries and the guiding we would normally build in.
The four daily anchors

Taiwan sits above Thailand and below Japan on a daily basis, and the gap between the careful and the comfortable tier is almost entirely hotel category plus the two or three days that need a private car.
Accommodation, which is the whole argument
Rates are per room per night for two sharing, as planning guidance rather than a quote. We confirm live rates for your dates before anything is booked.

Two lines deserve comment. The hot spring properties at Beitou and Jiaoxi price like Japanese ryokan because that is essentially what they are: a private bath, a set dinner, a set breakfast. Two nights of that across a two-week trip is a very good purchase and seven is not.
And the minsu, the Taiwanese homestay, is the sleeper category. In the east and in the tea country these are frequently better than a hotel at the same money, with the caveat that the host may speak limited English, which our partner team handles.
Food, which is the good news
Taiwan is one of two countries in our library where we routinely tell people they are budgeting too much for food.
- Convenience store breakfast, and there are tens of thousands of them: $2 to $4
- Lu rou fan, braised pork over rice, the great cheap plate: $1.50 to $3
- Beef noodle soup at a proper shop: $5 to $8
- Night market dinner for two, grazing across six or seven stalls: $15 to $20
- Set lunch at a decent restaurant: $8 to $15
- Xiaolongbao at a well-known house: $12 to $20 a head
- Dinner at a serious modern Taiwanese restaurant: $50 to $110 a head
- A proper tea tasting with a farmer, two hours: $30 to $60 for two
- Bubble tea, invented in Taichung in the 1980s: $2 to $3
A realistic daily food budget for someone eating well and eating widely is $30 to $45. You can eat superbly at $25 by staying in the night markets and the noodle shops, which is genuinely what many Taiwanese do.
Transport
High speed rail. Taipei to Zuoying in Kaohsiung, about 220 miles (350 km), runs under two hours and costs roughly $45 to $50 in standard class. Taipei to Taichung is about $22, Taipei to Tainan about $42. Fares are stable and we price your exact legs at booking.
Conventional rail. The east coast line from Taipei through Yilan to Hualien is around $12 to $20 depending on service, and Hualien to Taitung similar. These seats are the constraint on most itineraries. They sell out, especially at weekends and around holidays, the booking window opens a set number of days ahead, and we book the morning it opens.
Private car with English-speaking driver. $180 to $260 a day including fuel, for the days rail does not reach: Alishan, Sun Moon Lake, the high road over Hehuanshan, the tea country around Lugu, and the smaller east coast stops. We use a driver rather than self-drive because the mountain roads are narrow and busy with scooters and because a driver who knows which sections are closed after rain is worth more than the saving.
Cities. The stored-value card covers Taipei’s metro, buses, the city bike scheme and most convenience stores. Budget $4 to $7 a day in Taipei and less elsewhere. Taxis are cheap and metered.
Guiding. A licensed English-speaking guide is $180 to $280 a day. We use two or three across a fortnight, not fourteen, because Taiwan is the easiest country in Asia to travel independently and a good document does most of the work.

The three decisions that move the number
- How many nights are in Taipei. It is the most expensive bed on the island and the easiest place to spend an extra night without noticing.
- Whether the mountain days use a private car. Two or three car days is $400 to $700 across a trip, and it is the difference between reaching Alishan and the high road properly or not at all.
- Hot spring nights. Each one adds roughly $100 to $200 per person over a business hotel. Two is right. Seven is a different holiday.
Not on that list: the month. Taiwan’s rates move less seasonally than Japan’s, with the exception of Lunar New Year, usually late January or February, when the whole country travels, trains sell out weeks ahead and rates spike. The seasonal argument here is about weather rather than price, and it is set out in Taiwan month by month.
