Dubai and the Gulf, with a clear view of what is worth your time itinerary

A Gulf stopover and three weeks in Asia: Dubai at both ends

Dubai's real advantage is not the city, it is the position. It sits between Europe and almost everywhere in Asia we work, on one of the densest flight networks in the world, which means a few nights there costs you almost no additional flying time and breaks a journey that is otherwise fourteen hour

Romantic Dubai: 5 days, two hotels and two dinners worth planning around

Used that way, Dubai is very good. Three nights on the way out, while the body clock is still adjusting and the days are naturally short. Two nights on the way home, when a long flight has already been half done. Sixteen nights in between somewhere that needs the time.

This version uses Sri Lanka and the Maldives in the middle, because that is the pairing we build most often out of the Gulf. The same frame works with India, Thailand or Vietnam and we swap the middle without changing the shape.

Who it suits: three-week travellers, anyone who dislikes long single-sector flights, honeymoons that want variety, and families with older children.

Day by day

Dubai, days 1 to 3

Day 1: Arrive Dubai. Met and driven to the hotel. Nothing scheduled. Late afternoon on the creek if you are up to it: the abra crossing and the Deira souks, then dinner in the neighbourhood.

Day 2: Old Dubai and the galleries. Al Fahidi at opening with a guide, indoors for the middle of the day at the Museum of the Future, then Alserkal Avenue in Al Quoz in the late afternoon for the warehouse galleries. This is the honest half day of Dubai and it is the one people remember.

Day 3: Desert, then the night flight. Collected early afternoon, out to a small camp for a dune walk and dinner, then straight to the airport for an overnight flight to Colombo. It is a long day and it works because you sleep on the plane rather than in a hotel you paid for.

Sri Lanka, days 4 to 12

Day 4: Arrive Colombo, drive to Negombo. Twenty minutes to the coast for the first night. We do not put anyone on a four-hour drive after a long flight.

Day 5: Negombo to Sigiriya. North into the cultural triangle. Afternoon at the Dambulla cave temples.

Day 6: Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa. The rock fortress at first light, before the heat and the crowds. Polonnaruwa in the afternoon, best seen by bicycle.

Day 7: Sigiriya to Kandy. Arriving for the evening ceremony at the Temple of the Tooth.

Day 8: Kandy to the hill country. The botanical gardens, then the train south through the tea estates with reserved seats.

Day 9: The hill country. A working tea estate rather than a shop, a walk on the estate paths, and Little Adam’s Peak or the Nine Arch Bridge before breakfast for those who want it.

Day 10: The hills to safari. Down to Udawalawe or Yala for an afternoon game drive. Elephants are close to certain at Udawalawe. Nobody honest promises a leopard.

Day 11: Safari to the south coast. A morning drive, then west to Galle or a beach near it.

Day 12: Galle and the coast. The Dutch fort in the late afternoon when both the light and the temperature improve. Otherwise free.

The Maldives, days 13 to 18

Day 13: Fly Colombo to Malé, transfer to the island. A short flight, then the transfer. This is the day that needs the most planning: if the island is seaplane-only, the Colombo departure has to be early enough to reach Malé inside the seaplane’s daylight window. We choose the island and the flight together rather than separately.

Days 14 to 17: The island. Four full days. A guided orientation snorkel on the first morning, one reef boat, one sandbank drop-off, and otherwise nothing. After nine days of Sri Lanka moving every second night, this is the point of the trip.

Day 18: Transfer to Malé, fly to Dubai. Timed with a buffer against the seaplane schedule.

Dubai again, days 19 to 21

Day 19: Arrive Dubai. A different hotel from the first three nights, deliberately: beach this time if the first was in the old city, or the reverse. Nothing scheduled.

Day 20: Abu Dhabi, or nothing. Either the day south for the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Louvre Abu Dhabi, which is the strongest single day in the Emirates, or a day on a beach doing nothing before the flight home. We would put the mosque in if you have any appetite left, and leave it out if you do not.

Day 21: Fly home. The room held until the afternoon where the flight requires it.

What is included

Twenty nights across the three countries, all internal and regional flights, a private car and English-speaking driver-guide throughout Sri Lanka, the reserved hill-country train seats, park fees and jeeps for the safari, the Maldives transfer and the meal plan we recommend, private car with driver and guides in Dubai, the desert camp, all entries, all taxes including the Maldivian green tax, and a WhatsApp group with your consultant here and our people and partners in Dubai, Colombo and Malé.

Why Dubai at both ends and not one long stop

Five consecutive nights in Dubai is more than the city supports. Three plus two is the same number of nights and a much better trip, because the second visit has a different hotel, a different district, and a completely different mood after three weeks away.

It also does something practical. The two nights on the way home turn a fourteen-hour flight into two manageable ones, and they put a soft landing between the Maldives and your own front door.

Honest notes

Eight hotel changes in twenty-one days is a lot on paper. In practice five of them are in Sri Lanka, where the driving is the trip, and the last six nights involve no moving at all.

The alignment of seasons is what makes this route work. December to March is the dry window in the Maldives, the good window on Sri Lanka’s south and west coasts and in the hill country, and the season in the Gulf. From May to September we would reshape it: the Sri Lankan east coast instead of the south, and Dubai only if your dates are fixed, because the Gulf summer is genuinely unpleasant.

The middle sixteen days are interchangeable. Northern India, Thailand and Vietnam all work in the same frame, and if you tell us what you want from the middle we will build the version that fits.
