Classic Korea in 10 days: Seoul, Gyeongju and Busan
Ten days is not a compressed version of a Korea trip. It is the trip. We build more of this itinerary than all the others combined, and the most common revision we make is not adding days. It is moving a day from Seoul to Busan.
Who it suits: first-time visitors, couples, independent travellers and anyone who would rather do three places properly than six places quickly.
Day by day
Day 1: Arrive Seoul. Airport train or private transfer, hotel in Jongno or Bukchon depending on how central you want to be. Nothing scheduled beyond dinner within walking distance. Incheon to central Seoul is about an hour.
Day 2: Seoul, the old city. Gyeongbokgung at opening, then Changdeokgung with a timed ticket for the rear garden, which is the better of the two palaces and the one most first visits miss. Afternoon through Seochon’s lanes, and Gwangjang market for an early dinner with a guide who can read the stall signs.
Day 3: The DMZ. A half day north to Imjingak, the Third Infiltration Tunnel and the Dora observatory. It is a coach, a fixed route and a scripted commentary, and we would still send you: it is the clearest available way to understand the border. Joint Security Area access is a separate arrangement that opens and closes without notice, and we confirm what is running when you book. Afternoon free back in Seoul.
Day 4: Seoul, the modern city. The War Memorial or the National Museum of Korea in the morning, then the afternoon in Seongsu and Euljiro on foot, print shops and small bars in old industrial buildings. Optional evening walk on the Bukhansan foothills or up Namsan for the city at dusk.
Day 5: Seoul, free day. Deliberately unscheduled. Suggestions in your document include Suwon’s Hwaseong fortress walls, a half day at Bukhansan proper, the Leeum museum, or a slow morning and a bathhouse.
Day 6: Seoul to Gyeongju. Mid-morning KTX to Singyeongju, about two hours, then a short transfer into town. Afternoon among the Daereungwon burial mounds and the Cheomseongdae observatory, and the Wolji pond after dark, which is when it is worth seeing.
Day 7: Gyeongju. A full guided day: Bulguksa temple early, the Seokguram grotto above it, and the Gyeongju National Museum, which is better than its billing. Late afternoon free, and the town is small enough to walk.
Day 8: Gyeongju to Busan. Train or road south, about an hour. Afternoon at Jagalchi fish market and the lanes behind it, then Gamcheon’s painted terraces in the late light when the day groups have gone.
Day 9: Busan. Beomeosa temple in the hills in the morning, then the coastal path at Taejongdae or the Igidae cliff walk, and the evening on Gwangalli beach where the city eats outdoors. Free time built into the afternoon.
Day 10: Departure. Fly out of Busan Gimhae, or return to Seoul by KTX for an onward flight, or continue to Japan.

What we would change, and when
- Travelling in July or August? We would not run this itinerary as written. Seoul is hot and wet and the palaces are hard work by mid afternoon. We move days into Seoraksan and Gangwon, where summer is the right season.
- Want a rural night? Swap the Seoul free day for a night in Andong, the Hahoe folk village and a Confucian academy, on the way south.
- Have twelve days rather than ten? Add Jeju rather than another mainland city. Two more Korean cities will blur together. The island will not.
- Want the temple, not the tour? Replace the second Gyeongju night with a temple stay at Golgulsa or Beomeosa.
