The Maldives with children: 8 days on a short transfer
Two things decide whether a Maldives trip works with children, and neither of them is the kids' club. The first is the transfer, because a seaplane charges per person and a three-hour wait in a lounge with a four-year-old is a bad start. The second is the lagoon, because a child who can stand up in

Who it suits: families with children roughly three to fourteen, and multi-generational groups.
Day by day
Day 1: Arrive Malé, speedboat to the island. We plan family trips onto speedboat or domestic-flight islands wherever the rest of the brief allows. A speedboat costs less, runs after dark, and turns a transfer into forty minutes instead of a day. If your flight lands late, that difference is the whole first day of the holiday.
Day 2: Settling in. Nothing scheduled. A morning in the lagoon, an afternoon at the pool, and an early dinner. We ask the resort to set up the room before arrival: cots, bed rails, a fridge, and a kettle if you need one, all requested in writing rather than hoped for.
Day 3: Learning to snorkel. A private hour with an instructor in shallow water, which is worth far more than a group session. Most children go from nervous to confident in about forty minutes, and it changes the rest of the week.
Day 4: Half-day boat. A reef trip on a calm morning, cut short if it needs to be. On family files we build the excursion around the youngest person on the boat rather than the keenest.
Day 5: Free. Turtle spotting, a marine biology session if the island has a resident biologist, which several do and which children take more seriously than adults expect, or a day of doing nothing in particular.
Day 6: The sandbank. Dropped on a sandbank with an umbrella, a cool box and a pick-up time. Shallow water in every direction, nothing to fall off, and the best photographs of the week.
Day 7: Free. Sunset fishing is usually the hit with older children. Younger ones are generally happy with a second sandbank morning.
Day 8: Transfer and fly home. Timed with a proper buffer. Where the flight home is late at night, we arrange a day room so there is somewhere to shower, nap and change.
What is included
Seven nights in a family room, two-bedroom villa or connecting rooms, full board or all-inclusive where that is the sensible answer with children, all speedboat transfers, meet and assist on arrival, a private snorkel lesson, one reef excursion and one sandbank drop, a day room on departure where the flight requires it, all taxes and the green tax, and a WhatsApp group with our Delhi office and our partners in Malé.
What we look for in a family island
A wide shallow lagoon with sand entry rather than a coral drop-off close to shore.
Rooms that genuinely fit four, which is rarer than the booking pages suggest. A beach villa with a sofa bed is not the same as two bedrooms, and we price both.
A kids’ club that is staffed properly rather than a room with toys in it, and hours that match how you actually want to use it.
A restaurant with a buffet at a normal children’s dinner time, which sounds trivial and is not on an island where the alternative is a nine o’clock set menu.
No overwater villa for small children. Several resorts will not accept under-twelves in overwater rooms and we think the ones that will are usually wrong to. A beach villa with the lagoon two steps away is the better room here regardless.
Honest notes
All-inclusive is normally the right call with children on a resort island, not because it is cheaper on paper but because it removes the running arithmetic of every drink and ice cream.
Some islands are quietly not for children. They will accept them and the week will feel slightly awkward for everyone. We will tell you which those are.
Under about three years old, the honest answer is that a long flight and a resort island is a lot of effort for a child who will not remember it. We will still build it if that is what you want, and we will say what we think first.
