Small islands are a specific pleasure and a specific risk. Twenty rooms means the food has to be good every night, because there is nowhere else. It also means the reef and the beach are effectively yours. When it works it is the best version of the Maldives. We only put people on the ones that work.
Who it suits: couples and pairs of friends who care about design, food and quiet, and who would rather have a smaller island than a bigger brand.
Day by day
Day 1: Arrive Malé, transfer to the island. Met before immigration. The transfer is chosen at the planning stage: several of the best small islands are seaplane-only, which means a daylight arrival, and if your flight does not allow it we build a night at a Hulhumalé hotel rather than sacrifice the island.
Day 2: The island. No schedule. A guided orientation snorkel on the house reef in the morning so you know where the entry point and the current are, then nothing.
Day 3: The reef, on a private boat. Small islands generally run small boats, which means a private excursion is affordable in a way it is not on a large resort. A channel dive or a manta point, two hours, back for lunch.
Day 4: Free, or the kitchen. Several of the small islands have a chef worth spending an afternoon with: a market run in a dhoni, a fish-buying trip, a cooking session, or simply a tasting menu built around what came in that morning. Where it exists and is good, we book it.
Day 5: The sandbank. Dropped alone with an umbrella and a cool box. On a small island this is usually a ten-minute boat ride rather than an excursion.
Day 6: Free. Sunset fishing, a dive, a long nothing.
Day 7: Transfer to Malé and fly home. Late checkout or a day room arranged where the flight home is at night.
What is included
Six nights in a villa chosen for its position rather than its category name, half board or full board depending on the island’s kitchen and what it charges, all transfers including the seaplane where the island requires it, meet and assist, a guided orientation snorkel, one private reef excursion, a private sandbank drop, all taxes and the green tax, and a WhatsApp group with our Delhi office and our partners in Malé.
What makes a small island worth it
The house reef. On a twenty-villa island the reef is effectively private, which is the closest thing to a genuine luxury the Maldives sells. It also means a poor reef has nothing to hide behind. We check this first.
The kitchen. One restaurant, seven nights. That is either the best thing about the week or the worst. We have eaten on the islands we recommend, or we have people who have, and we will name the ones where the food falls off after four days.
The room, not the category. Villa naming is close to meaningless across the country. What matters is what is under the deck, what faces the deck, and how far the reef edge is. We describe the actual villa.
The staff ratio, which on a small island is the difference between attentive and intrusive. Some of these places are excellent at reading it and some are not.
Honest notes
A small island can feel small by day five. If you know that about yourself, a mid-sized island with better facilities is the honest recommendation and we will make it.
The very best small islands sell out six to nine months ahead for the dry season, and they hold their rates. Booking late here rarely produces a bargain, it produces a different island.
The most expensive island in the Maldives is not the best island in the Maldives. We will happily tell you which top-tier properties we think are coasting on a name, and which ones at half the rate are the better week.
